Language Arts—Feature Call

In each issue, we will feature a final page called “In Closing . . . .” This is a one-page format (750-word maximum) that could take the form of a poem, essay, conversation, journal entry, short story, or visual art with caption. The focus is on the voices of educators who have recognized a shift in perspective, perception, or practice—in their school, their district, or themselves. We hope that readers will look forward to this feature because it prompts them to remember and rethink. Deadline is ongoing.

Voices from the Middle—The Toll We Pay: Critical Literacy

Young adolescents are naturally inquisitive and have many questions about themselves and their lives. Critical literacy can help them analyze and understand how texts contribute to maintaining the status quo and to making the world a more (or less) equitable place to live. It can provide a lens through which adolescents read and write about social justice issues, such as bullying—a problem that affects all students, including the bully, especially in middle school. Other appropriate topics include video games, movies, newspapers, TV programs, and other aspects of pop culture. Critical literacy prompts questions such as: What is the author trying to do or make me think? Is this text true for all people (in terms of ethnicity, gender, religion, SES, culture, sexual orientation, nationality, language)? Who is included or left out in the text? How does an awareness of how and why texts can influence readers in multiple ways make your students more critical readers of texts (books, pictures, media, oral discourse, etc.)? How does it make their life’s journey more just and equitable? Deadline: December 1, 2008.
