Join us for the 25th annual Literacies for All Summer Institute in Pasadena, California!
Our conference theme, Making Meaning: Teaching and Learning Together, opens a conversation about the transformative potential of curriculum with learners at the heart. Conference participants will enjoy a variety of sessions involving meaning making through reading, writing, e-journaling, photography, stories, dialogue, music, drama, multimodal and multimedia projects exploring literature, science, social justice, and more.  Sessions will describe teaching and learning together across a range of cultural and linguistic communities from preschool to college classrooms as well as family and community settings.
Debra GoodmanDuring these challenging times for educators, the WLU Literacies for All Summer Institute is a small, friendly conference promising exploration and rejuvenation with colleagues reclaiming the potential of critical whole language pedagogy.  Our preconference workshop will set the tone with a panel of educational activists and theorists establishing communities of professional conscience.  These communities are working towards creating responsive inquiry-based curriculum, honoring the languages and cultures of students, and resisting standards-based teacher evaluation.
Pasadena promises to be a wonderful conference site, with museums, dining, and shopping at hand–and mountains, the Pacific Ocean coast, and other attractions nearby.  Come to Pasadena this summer and bring a friend!

Debra Goodman
President, Whole Language Umbrella

The Literacies for All Summer Institute is a forum in which the creative work of teachers and learners in this increasingly complex world is shared.  In whole language classrooms curriculum builds from the experiences, inquiries, challenges, and problems in learners’ daily lives. Learners develop as readers and writers as they address important issues, solve problems, and explore themes that cross boundaries between subject areas.
