State Coordinator
State coordinator selects judges, receives the student papers, coordinates the papers for judging, and reports the results to NCTE.
Judge
Receives student papers from the coordinator. Each student submits two written compositions: an impromptu theme and a best writing. Two judges, generally one high school and one college teacher from the nominee’s state read each composition and score using a rubric and guidelines.

Judge
Receive papers from the coordinator. Each student submits two written compositions: a themed writing (on a designated topic) and a sample of best writing. Two judges, generally one eighth grade teacher and one high school teacher from the nominee’s state read each composition and score using a rubric and guidelines.
Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines
State Coordinator
State coordinator receives the literary magazines, selects judges, and directs the work in judging the literary magazines. Magazines are evaluated and ranked. Critiques of individual magazines are not provided.
Judge
Each magazine entry is evaluated by two judges working independently. Judges examine a variety of aspects of each magazine using a scoring sheet and pertinent information provided by the entering schools.
