Friday, November 19

From the Ground Up: Program Assessment at Daytona State College (C)
A.55 -- 9:30-10:45 a.m.

In the fall of 2008, facing administrative pressure to provide data for program review, writing faculty at Daytona State College (a 2-year college offering limited 4-year degrees) created a grassroots assessment initiative. Almost two years into the process, it's time to re-evaluate, hone our instruments, and reflect on our purpose.

Teachers Together for Students: Dual Enrollment and Literate LIves (S-C)
B.47 -- 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Panelists will discuss dual enrollment experiences at their two- and four-year institutions, focusing on how teachers and students negotiate intersections of high school and college learning created by early college programs. This highly interactive session will offer numerous opportunities for audience members to contribute to the discussion.

Pen and Paper to Web 2.0: Teachers and Students Moving through Multiple Learning Modalities (C)
C.46 -- 12:30-1:45 p.m.

This session uses a single text to demonstrate how best practices can be revitalized in the basic writing classroom through multiple technologies. Using pen and paper as the instrument of the writing process can be augmented by multiple digital platforms that tap into emerging technologies our students already embrace.

Forward: Pathways to Student Success (C)
D.51 -- 2:30-3:45 p.m.

Since most two-year colleges are open admission institutions, we have a unique challenge of retaining and increasing the graduation rate of our students. This panel presentation will share various pathways and strategies that ensure studnet success in the writing classroom.

Renewing Teaching and Learning: Contemplative Practices in Higher Education (C)
D.52 -- 2:30-3:45 p.m.

Contemplative practices such as meditation, visualization, and guided journaling are renewing teaching and learning in college by creating a physical and mental environment that allows students to focus attention, increase awareness, deepen understanding, and perceive critical connections within a subject and among themselves. Audience will participate. Handouts will be provided.

New Media--New Expertise in Classroom Environments (C)
E.53 -- 4:00-5:15 p.m.

In this session, panelists will focus on how New Media and Digital Technologies change the writing classroom. Speakers will consider how interactions and sharing among faculty and students transform thinking and learning.

Satruday, November 20

How to Get Published in TETYC (Or at Least Improve Your Chances) (C)
I.46 -- 1:15-2:30 p.m.

The emphasis of this discussion will be to provide audience members with specific actions to enhance their probability of acceptance in TETYC. The process of submissions, suggestions, and specific "tips" will be shared by the panel.

Using Young Adult Literature to Teach Critical Literacy (C)
M.34 -- 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

This session discusses ways that critical literacy can be taught using Young Adult Literature. Gender roles and value awareness provide topics for stude3nt examination.

The Politicking of Textbooks and the Textbooking of Politics: Literacy Education in the Communication College (C)
M.40 -- 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

A panel discussion on the politics of textbook selection for writing courses in the community college.
