Tour of TYCA!
Stop Five on the 2014 Tour of TYCA Showcases TYCA-PNW (October 2013, Seattle, WA)
In his presentation, “The Worst Research Paper Ever on Purpose: Teaching Rhetorical Choice-Making through Intentional Rule Breaking," Aylen Rounds, Pierce Community College, finds a way to teach students how to make effective rhetorical choices by breaking all the rules with his “Worst Research Paper Ever (on Purpose) Contest.” Students’ sense of agency and engagement with rhetorical decisions increases as the stakes are lowered, and they have fun and learn what makes writing effective while intentionally writing a “bad” paper.
Lisa Bernhagen and Wendy Swyt, Highline Community College, describe acceleration efforts at their college that are faculty designed and work within their particular institutional constraints in their PowerPoint, “Increase Earned College Credits through Faculty DIY Courses That Work within Institutional Constraints: Acceleration Models." HCC’s PLUS course is a cohort model (on the quarter system) that is easier to schedule (for teachers, students, and facilities), yet provides similar positive results as the original mainstreaming model developed by Community College of Baltimore County.
