Tour of TYCA!

Stop Six on the 2014 Tour of TYCA Showcases TYCA-SW (November 2013, Austin, TX)

TYCA SW's "Keep Teaching Weird" theme invited many interesting presentations, including Jenia Walter's "'Word People': Acting Out Sentence Structure" and Sarah Fish's "Our Monsters, Ourselves: How Monsters Can Build a Classroom Community in Developmental English".

Jenia Walter, San Juan Community College, incorporates kinesthetic activities to teach basic sentence structure, scaffolding from hands on activities to text-based activities. By accessing multiple learning styles and encouraging active learning, students more fully grasp ideas and apply and transfer knowledge.

Sarah Fish, Houston Community College, shares a manuscript of her presentation along with a link to her Prezi, which outlines how the theme of "monsters" fits well with the fear and trepidation new college students, particularly nontraditional college students, bring with them as they enter the composition classroom. Fish describes how the "monster" theme has enabled her to enhance transparency in her pedagogy, develop community in her classroom, and more fully and critically engage students, all while having fun.

To discuss this session with other TYCA colleagues or to view Tour sessions at a later date, please visit the TYCA Connected Community library.
