Teaching Romeo and Juliet: A Differentiated Approach

Thursday, November 13, 2008
5:00 - 6:00 p.m. EST
Presenter: Lyn Hawks
Level: Middle, Secondary

What's different about differentiation? Why differentiate instruction for a Shakespeare play? Differentiated instruction promotes success for all students while building classroom community, and these strategies bring the best of educational practices to the study of 400 year-old language. By addressing students' readiness levels, interests, and learning styles, a teacher can make Shakespearean text come alive. In this web seminar, Lyn will review strategies for differentiation and share assignments from the book Teaching Romeo and Juliet: A Differentiated Approach, including

  • Pre, mid-, and post-testing
  • Compacting and independent study for gifted students
  • Tiered close reading assignments
  • Mixed-readiness assignments and skill strand activities
  • Strategies for Socratic discussion
