What kinds of literacies will young people need in order to become fulfilled, skilled, humane, and active citizens in the culturally diverse, multimodal world of the early 21st century? In English as in all of the disciplines we are charged with preparing young people to inhabit the world as better, more thoughtful, and more humane citizens. For the English teacher, this presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. English teachers are also challenged to develop curricula to meet the needs of their increasingly ethnically and linguistically diverse classrooms. This presentation focuses on powerful English instruction in diverse 21st century classrooms—Ernest will focus on the possibilities for rethinking the definition of what English is as a discipline and also what it means to teach English powerfully in this context.
In this hour we will discuss:
- Where our instruction begins and what our students need
- Multiple examples of successful practice in diverse settings
- incorporating pop culture into units that feature novels and other pieces of canonical literature
- poetry units featuring hip-hop, popular music, and spoken word and canonical poetry
- uses of Cyberspace in the English Classroom
Within each example, Ernest will discuss unit development, student learning, and teacher preparation. |
