Reading Initiative CoLEARN is the online resource for study groups participating in NCTE’s long-term professional development program, NCTE Reading Initiative. The program brings together teachers, administrators, and trained literacy leaders from across the nation to engage in a study of the theory, knowledge base, and best practices of teaching reading and writing.
Affiliated educators work with print and online resources that include practical, proven teaching and assessment strategies ... explored within experiences that value and address in-service or pre-service teachers' expertise, questions, and growing knowledge ... supported by carefully selected professional reading and research ... that prompt them to look carefully at their literacy vision, student achievement, classroom activities, and teaching strategies.
RI CoLEARN can complement literacy methods courses by providing:
-
NCTE journal articles and select book chapters, from current issues back to 1997, accessed via a searchable database. In addition, site users can browse reading syllabi with direct article links used by other instructors in the RI network.
-
Online discussions with other educators. We encourage you and your students to talk together, pose questions to other educators, as well as to join in on current discussions.
-
Literacy invitations and engagements organized by teaching team leader, Jerry Harste, in the same format as his popular Voices from the Middle (March 2003) article, What Do We Mean by Literacy Now. Engagements address the critical literacy, language study, meaning-making, and inquiry. The teaching team welcomes feedback to help identify or create additional content.
-
Access to the on-line RI files: Models/Tool/Strategies and Coaching/Site Leader Resources. These extensive collections have been extracted from across the RI print curriculum and are exclusive to RI CoLEARN.
Additional print materials can be purchased.
Reading Initiative resources are based on research from sociopsycholinguistics, holistic assessment, school change, and constructivist learning theory.
