The 11 standards set forth here express the conviction of the Joint Task Force on Assessment: involving the entire learning community is essential if assessment is truly to foster learning. Illustrated with case studies, the report offers guidelines for assessment methods that reflect the complex interactions we now recognize among teachers, learners, texts, and communities; that ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students; and that foster the critical, reflective literacy that our society requires.
