Adventuring with Books: A Booklist for Pre-K—Grade 6, 13th Edition
Editor(s): Amy A. McClure, Janice V. Kristo

In this latest edition of Adventuring with Books, teachers and librarians will find descriptions of more than 850 engaging texts suitable for student use in background research, unit study, or pleasure reading, and children will find books that delight, amuse, and entertain. Every young reader’s and listener’s interests will be addressed somewhere under the 24 general topics, including Science Nonfiction; Struggle and Survival; Fantasy Literature; Sports, Games, and Hobbies; and Mathematics in Our World. In an ongoing effort to highlight literature that reflects our schools’ multiple ethnicities, this booklist also introduces readers to recent literature that celebrates African American, Asian and Pacific Island, Hispanic American, and indigenous cultures.

Each chapter begins with a brief list of selection criteria, a streamlined list of all annotated titles in that chapter, and an introduction in which chapter editors discuss their criteria and the status of available books in their subject area. Detailed indexes—author, illustrator, subject, and title—help readers of all ages find specific texts. As always, Adventuring with Books is a collaborative effort; in addition to the organizing talents of editors Amy A. McClure and Janice V. Kristo, this edition reflects the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm of educators across the country—elementary teachers, librarians, postsecondary teachers, and curriculum coordinators, as well as parents and aficionados of children’s literature—who read and discussed many more books than could be listed in this booklist. And while adults wrote the reviews, the voices and opinions of children are often included as well, lending credence to adult choices of the most effective and powerful children’s books published between 1999 and 2001.
