Fate of Progressive Language Policies and Practices, The
Editor(s): Curt Dudley-Marling, Carole Edelsky

Progressive language policies often encounter fierce resistance. In this collection, editors Dudley-Marling and Edelsky highlight progressive projects in the real worlds of individual public schools, school districts, and institutions. The essays in Part I provide a theoretical and historical context for viewing local action within larger frameworks, while the “insider” stories in Part II show how local activity plays a major role in determining the outcomes of projects. The contributors—including Patrick Shannon, Geneva Smitherman, and Sheridan Blau—encourage language educators working against the grain to heighten their awareness of their own contexts and to take heart as they engage in progressive language projects.
