Web Seminars and the On Demand Recordings as Professional Learning Opportunities - Previous Revision

How do you take a 60 minute online workshop and turn it into a sustained professional development experience?

Here's just a few ideas from your peers.  Share your ideas below.

Middle and Secondary English Teachers Gather to Talk and Earn Credit
These sessions are an inexpensive method of bringing well-known literacy experts in the field to our district.  Our district purchases one connection in nearly every Web seminar that NCTE offers each school year.  I reserve a meeting room and invite teachers from across the district to attend. By offering credit for participation in NCTE Web Seminars, we have been able to facilitate some wonderful discussions throughout the district.

Listen in as she explains why she is offering credit for this effective, yet inexpensive method of professional development.

Elementary School Teachers
In such challenging economic times, we have chosen to participate in several NCTE Web seminars because they are tremendous professional development tools that help us meet our instructional goals.  I gather a group of elementary teachers and provide food and drink and we plan for extra time at the end for additional conversation.  Kudos to NCTE for pursing quality seminars in an accessible format!
--Karen, Language Arts Coordinator, Springfield, Illinois

Professor, Department of English and NCTE Student Affiliate Organizer

In the past year our campus launched an NCTE Student Affiliate group and with the financial support of our English Education Department we purchased a seat in several NCTE Web seminars to provide as many outreach events as possible to serve the entire K-12 English Education students and faculty.  These educational events not only served this purpose, but also gave our group an opportunity to promote and establish our organization’s presence on campus as a professional organization.

On Demand CD Use

On Demand Web Seminars

We have had great success in viewing the On Demand CD's because of fewer issues with scheduling and since I preview the recording, I know where I should skip ahead or pause the presentation to best suit our needs.  I usually faciliate the conversation and with the option to play and pause when needed we could have talked all night!

Incorporation Within a Methods Course

NCTE webinars provide my pre-service teachers with rich and timely content through an interactive experience. Whether used during class as a shared activity or as a supplement to regular instruction, the webinars allow my students to connect with leaders in English education in ways that normally they would have only been able to do through conferences and workshops. This kind of access to the latest research and theories about teaching English helps them see the bigger professional picture and join critical conversations about literacy right as they begin their careers.
                --Troy Hicks, Central Michigan University

Comments from Pre-Service Teachers:

"It is so amazing to finally be able to communicate with others
in the field of education. Sharing our resources and ideas
about concepts will will benefit the children that we teach!"

"The most fascinating part of the webinar is that all
participants are able to get their voices and opinions heard
through discussion. Its also a great resource and easily
accessible for busy teachers that might not be able to
    attend an all day conference."
