The NCTE Hopkins Award is Only Awarded on Even Years...the next award will be given in 2010.
The English Journal Edwin M. Hopkins Awards are given biannually to authors of the best articles published in English Journal during the previous two volume years. Because there is another award for authors who are secondary school teachers, eligible entrants for this award are those not teaching secondary school. Secondary school teachers who collaborate with eligible entrants may be considered.
The 2008 Edwin M. Hopkins English Journal award winner is....
Helen Collins Sitler of Indiana University of Pennsylvania for “Writing Like a Good Girl" (January 2008).
Honorable Mentions were awarded to Heather Bruce, Shirley Brown, Nancy McCracken, Mary Bell-Nolan for “Feminist Pedagogy Is for Everybody: Troubling Gender in Reading and Writing “ (January 2008)
and
Leslie David Burns for “A Practical Guide to Political Action: Grassroots and English Teaching” (March 2007).
The committee chair was William G. McBride, and members included Kay Bushman Haas, Elizabeth Kahn, Karen J. Hartman, Wanda Porter, Pamela K. Schoen, and Diane Waff.
Awards will be presented at the NCTE Annual Convention during the Secondary Section Luncheon on Saturday, November 22, 2008.
