CNV Fellowship Activities

The program covers a two-year period.  During this time, the cohort of fellows participate in the following activities:

Year 1:  The first year is devoted to the development of the cohort of fellows and mentors, which includes building relationships and refining the fellows' proposed or ongoing research.  Support is primarily achieved through participation in two institutes.

The first institute during the first year is held at NCTE's Annual Convention.  Fellows meet for an intensive all-day session with their mentors (established researchers) to discuss research goals, methods of inquiry, and plans for analysis.  All fellows will present aspects of their research at a guaranteed poster session at the Annual Convention.  Immediately following the poster session, alumni of CNV will present aspects of their ongoing research at a guaranteed research session.

The second institute during the first year is held in the spring at a university campus and serves as a follow-up to the fall meeting.  The institute takes place across three days and may include guest workshops conducted by members of the faculty from the host university.

Year 2:  The second year is devoted to moving the fellows' research toward completion and/or publication.  Fellowship support in the second year is primarily achieved through participation in two institutes.

The first institute during the second year is held at NCTE's Annual Convention.  As with Year 1, fellows meet for an intensive all-day session with their mentors to discuss the progression of their research.  All fellows will present aspects of their research at a guaranteed poster session at the Annual Convention.  Immediately following the poster session, alumni of CNV will present aspects of their ongoing research at a guaranteed research session.

The second institute during the second year is held in the spring at a university campus and serves as a follow-up to the fall meeting.  The institute takes place across three days and may include guest workshops conducted by mentors of the faculty from the host university.  At the end of the institute, fellows will be acknowledged during a CNV graduation ceremony.

In addition to these institutes, each Fellow will work closely with an assigned Mentor from the NCTE research community.  Collectively, Fellows and Mentors, as a community of practice, will participate in a range of activities, including the following:

  • Research poster sessions
  • Mock job interviews and presentations
  • Discussions about research with activist scholars
  • Data research sessions
  • Intense one-on-one mentoring time
  • Career advising sessions
  • Research collaborations with other fellows and mentors
  • Cross collaborations with the various CNV cohorts
