NCTE Web Site User Recommendations

The new NCTE Web site contains many elements that use existing and innovative web technologies to deliver the best possible experience to you. Unfortunately, not all computers have the ability to use and view these elements. We have listed our recommendations for browser software and security settings below. We have made every effort to standardize these needs; however, many older computers may lack the updates needed to view these elements. If you are unable to view or use NCTE's Web site, please refer back to this page for information.

Browsers and Operating Systems

While the NCTE Web site is optimized for Internet Explorer 6.0 and Netscape 7.0, it is also compatible with the most recent versions of many other popular browsers such as Mozilla. Additionally, the Web site can be viewed with a graceful degradation on both browsers down to version 5.0 on Internet Explorer and 4.79 on Netscape where you can expect to experience limited functionality. Any browser less than 5.0 does not support positional CSS (cascading style sheets) and the user should consider upgrading. It is also recommended that cookies and client-side javascript be enabled to maximize the functionality of the Web site. We have compiled a list of the most popular and compatible browsers readily available for download for free below, if you should choose to upgrade at any time. You can cross-reference the current operating system on your computer with your browser of choice to find the appropriate download site.

Internet Cookies
The NCTE Web site must first identify you as a registered user or member in order to allow access to personalized and subscribed content. To do this, the browser stores information in a small text file, called a "cookie," on the hard disk in your computer. Many browsers today have custom security features that limit and deny this ability. Settings for cookie acceptance must be enabled on your Web browser in order for you to log in and use the site. This allows NCTE to identify the extent of your access and provide a seamless interaction throughout your visit. NCTE only uses cookies in a per-session format to support your activity within the site and does not collect any personal information from your computer.

Web browsers are typically set up to allow the use of cookies; however, many institutions place greater restrictions on computers and browsers in their labs and offices. If this is the case, you cannot often change these settings on your own and will need to contact your network administrator for help or alternatives. For personal computers, you can customize the level of Internet security based on your own needs and comfort level; however, if your browser is set to not accept cookies, or specifically from the ncte.org domain, it is not possible to log in and access your personal content or many of NCTE's online resources such as journals and communities.

If you are unable to log in with a valid user ID and password, or your member number and last name, and no specific error is given on the login page, there is a possibility your browser's security settings are too strict and are not accepting the NCTE session. Please use the following guidelines and additional resources to check that your browser has cookies enabled:

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Many of NCTE's online resources and journal archives are in PDF format and were created in Adobe Acrobat. Adobe offers a free reader to view and print these files. It is available on their corporate Web site.

Macromedia Flash Player
Macromedia Flash has rapidly become the Web standard for motion graphics. NCTE will soon be incorporating this technology into many of its demonstrations, walkthroughs, and interactive areas of content. While most computers and operating systems today are distributed with this software pre-installed, some older platforms may not be compatible. You can download the most recent version on the Macromedia corporate Web site.
