College English

THE OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE COLLEGE SECTION NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH. PUBLISHED SINCE 1939.

CE covers a wide spectrum of topics relevant to the discipline of English at the level of higher education. We publish articles on both literature and composition as well as other disciplinary concerns, and we are open to all theoretical approaches and schools of thought. Because we are a scholarly journal, we do not publish narrowly practical articles about classroom practices. Because our readership is broad-based, we try to insure that articles appeal to nonspecialists as well as specialists in particular areas.

Besides articles (three or four per issue), each issue of CE typically includes

  • at least one review essay covering at least two books;
  • one or more Comment & Response exchanges--comments readers send in on particular articles, usually with a response from the author;
  • Announcements and Calls for Papers (see Submitting Announcements);
  • and, of course, advertisements, above all for books of interest to English teachers.
  • The final issue of each volume includes an index and a listing of the readers who have reviewed manuscripts for the journal that year.

Who Runs CE?

College English is the official journal of the College Section of NCTE, the National Council of Teachers of English. It has been published continuously since the fall of 1939; with Volume 60 in 1998 we celebrated the journal's diamond jubilee.

The editorship of CE changes: at intervals a new editor is appointed by an NCTE Search Committee and the editorial office moves to a new university campus. Editors are appointed for three years, renewable for a further four. The last four editors were Richard Ohmann of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Donald Gray of the University of Indiana, James Raymond of the University of Alabama, Louise Z. Smith of the University of Massachusetts-Boston, and Jeanne Gunner of Santa Clara University.  The current editor is John Schilb of Indiana University.

CE is a refereed journal: articles are reviewed anonymously by scholars with established reputations in the relevant field. The journal belongs to the Council of Editors of Learned Journals.

How Often Is CE Published?

CE is published six bimonthly issues per volume year, in  September, November, January, March, May, and July.

What Is the Circulation of CE?

For the year ended July 2005 the average paid monthly circulation of  CE was 7,899 copies. Subscribers include individuals and libraries, in the US and abroad.
