Reading Across the Day in Deborah MacPhee's First Grade
Carver-Lyon Elementary, Columbia, SC
Students discuss a non-fiction read aloud. Responses to and discussions of texts are always encouraged. At the right, students work "knee to knee" telling stories inspired by Robert Munsch's Mud Puddle.
This student is reading independently from his book bucket of "just right" books. As the students read independently, I circulate to conduct reading conferences. This gives me the opportunity to talk with every reader every week.
Partner Reading is another key engagement in our classroom. Students support each other as they share familiar books and are encouraged to talk and make connections together.
