“Poetry in an Age of Anxiety.”  Keynote speech for English teachers in the Oregon Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference.  Grants Pass, Oregon. Scheduled for October 14, 2005.

“Starting With Little Things: Poetry Writing In the Classroom.”  Keynote and breakout sessions for elementary and secondary teachers.  Northwest Inland Writing Project Spring Conference.  Spokane, Washington, March 2004.

“Poetry in Everyday Life: Reading It, Writing It.”  Keynote and breakout sessions, Utah Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference. Salt Lake City, Utah.  October 2003.
 
 
Workshops Conducted

“Poems You Didn’t Know You Could Write: Language Play to Motivate Reluctant Readers and Writers.”  Many one- to three-hour Writing Project workshops in Oregon, Utah, Washington, Idaho, Oklahoma, California. 1980 - 2005.  Recent variations on this theme at 1) Puget Sound Writing Project, Seattle, Washington, March 2003; and 2) Hugo House (a community-based literary organization), Seattle, March 2003.

“Writing Our Roots,” adult workshop conducted at 1) the Oregon State Poetry Association Annual Conference, Coos Bay, Oregon. June 2002; and 2) Foothill College Writers’ Conference, Los Altos, California. July 2003.

“Finding the Poet Within,” a week-long poetry writing workshop for teachers wishing to work on their own writing: to develop a sense of themselves as poets, exploring a variety of subjects, styles, traditions, and approaches.  Northwest Inland Writing Project, University of Idaho, July 2004.

"Routes to the Writer Within: Poetry Literacy in the Middle and High School Classroom." NCTE Annual Convention, New York City, November 2007.

“The Art of Revision.” 1) a one-hour presentation at Foothill College Writers’ Conference, Los Altos, California, July 2003; and 2) a three-hour presentation in the Antioch University Los Angeles MFA Program, June 1999.

“Here’s Looking at Me, Here’s Looking at You: Creating Portraits with Poetry.” A one–hour presentation given as part of inservice workshops, 1995-2005.  Also given to a group of public school art educators, gathered for an all day conference on Art Education, held at the University of Oregon Museum of Art, March 1995.
