Carol RothenbergCarol is a resource teacher in the Office of Language Acquisition in the San Diego Unified School District. She coaches teachers, facilitates study groups of teachers and administrators, and provides technical assistance to schools on issues related to English learners. A former bilingual special education teacher, Carol has also taught high school Spanish and has been an elementary school literacy coach. She co-authored Teaching English Language Learners: A Differentiated Approach (with Douglas Fisher) and English Language Learners in the English Classroom (with Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey). Carol has taught in masters’ programs at the University of San Diego and the University of California San Diego. Her presentation topics focus on language and literacy across the curriculum for English learners.

Presentations
Carol has presented at the school, district, state and national levels. She presents on topics related to developing academic language proficiency and meeting grade-level content standards for English language learners. She can work with ongoing study groups or make presentations to large groups across the content areas.

Carol has co-authored two books on teaching English language learners: Language Learners in the English Classroom, and Teaching English Language Learners: A Differentiated Approach. Both books provide teachers with strategies, tools and resources to improve achievement of English language learners.
Language Learners in the English Classroom
Language LearnersThis book is designed as a tool to guide English teachers in designing powerful lessons that accelerate the achievement of students who are learning English. It also helps English teachers play a role in helping ELLs achieve academic success across disciplines. Nancy co-authored this book with Doug Fisher.

Education and Experience
Carol holds a masters’ degree in Special Education and a certificate in Bilingual Crosscultural and Academic Language Development. She is fluent in Spanish and a strong background in teaching English language learners. She has worked with teachers in grades K-12 across all content areas, to develop expertise in helping their students gain proficiency in English and meet grade-level standards.
