Professional Experience University Teaching/Institutes
- 2006-07 Teacher development director for the Teaching Tolerance through English Project, sponsored by US Embassies in Central Europe. This program brings together middle school teachers and learners from countries in central Europe (Hungary, Kosovo, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro, to date) to develop intercultural understanding, strategies for developing tolerance and resolving conflicts, and English language.
- 2007 Academic Specialist, Office of English Language Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Public Diplomacy, US Department of State in Delhi and Bangalor, India, to conduct workshops and seminars on English education for young learners.
- 2007 Language Acquisition Expert Working Group, for Language World, A project of the Hewlett Foundation Open Educational Resources Initiative.
- 2003-06 Consultant on pedagogy, language development, program design and development, Curriculum Developer, U.S. Department of Education E Language Learning Program.
- 2003-04 School District of Philadelphia YS Evaluation Panel. Evaluate program for learners of English in compliance with 1987 Consent Decree; assist in writing English Language policy for the district.
- 2001-2004 Consultant, Integrated English Language Program II. Project STEPS (Standards for Teachers of English at Preservice). Worked with a national group of members of the faculty and ministry in Egypt to develop and plan implementation of standards for preservice English Language teachers of school-age students.

- 2001 Academic Specialist for the Office of English Language Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Public Diplomacy, US Department of State in South Africa and Mozambique. Conducted workshops and institutes on HIV/AIDS Prevention Education for English teachers in Southern Africa.
- 1998-2001 Consultant/Educator, Integrated English Language Program II Primary English Language Development Projects. 1998: Cairo and Assiut, Egypt; 1999: Minya and Cairo, Egypt, "Communicative Language Teaching for Children," and Autumn Follow-On Institute; 2000: Cairo, “Materials Development Institute I” and “Materials Development Institute II; ” ongoing consultation to develop, with Egyptian clients, SPEER (Spotlight on Primary English Education Resources), a resource developed for primary English educators in Egypt. Institutes are designed to improve English language teaching and learning in Egypt. Roles include needs assessment, identification of best practices, planning and organization of research-based training methodologies, leadership of the institutes, developing monitoring and assessment instruments, conducting program evaluation to measure and monitor outcomes, developing protocols and planning and assisting clients with performing field testing of institute methodologies, reporting on educational progress and outcomes of the project, working with clients to develop Egyptian resource guide based on the methodologies and field testing experiences. Also involved in an ongoing standards project with national English language education leaders from the ministry of education and faculties of education in Egypt.
- 1995 Instructor, Georgia State University Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL: "Classroom Practices for English as a Second Language"; “Intercultural Communication”; "Second Language Acquisition." Frequent consultation/course development in the Teacher Training Initiative for Egyptian Teachers and Supervisors. Developed courses: "Teaching Reading and Writing through Literature", “Visual Aids” and “Foundations of Workshop Design for Supervisors.”
- 1996-2001 Director and Instructor, Project SEED (Site-based ESOL Endorsement in DeKalb). "Social-Cultural Issues in the Education of Language Minority Children"; "Applied/Contrastive Linguistics"; and "Methods and Materials in Bilingual Education/ESOL." Developed the proposal and plan for DeKalb County for a state-approved, site-based inservice program. Designed and delivered courses in four sites to date. This program is designed to promote English language acquisition in schools with large immigrant populations of English learners through a schoolwide program to develop classroom teachers’ cultural awareness and knowledge, understanding of language and language acquisition, and implementation of research-based best practices in English language and bilingual education.
- 1999 Moss Chair of Excellence in English, The University of Memphis. "Second Language Acquisition and Second Language Methodology." Designed and conducted courses for K–12 teachers working with English learners; consulted with the department on development of the ESOL certification program.
