Thomas McCannThomas McCann is an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction with Elmhurst Public Schools. He has taught English in a variety of school settings: four high schools, two colleges, and three universities. Tom has published articles in English Journal, Educational Leadership, and many more. With Peter Smagorinsky and Stephen Kern he is coauthor of Explorations: Introductory Activities for Literature and Compositions, 7-12. He teamed with Larry Johannessen for two books, including Supporting Beginning English Teachers: Research and Implications for Teacher Induction (NCTE 2005) and Talking in Class: Using Discussion to Enhance Teaching and Learning (NCTE 2006). Tom is available to present to schools on teaching writing, classroom discussion, inquiry learning, concerns and support for beginning teachers, and team teaching.

This book guides readers in developing skills that promote and facilitate authentic discussion within the ELA classroom. Speaking from their own classroom experience, Tom and others introduce some basic considerations for planning, managing, and evaluating large-group and small-group discussions.
Supporting Beginning English Teachers: Implications for Success
Supporting Beginning English TeachersTom, Larry R. Johannessen, and Bernard P. Ricca discuss their findings from a three-year research study investigating why some early-career English teachers leave the profession while others stay, in this NCTE book.

Awards and Honors
Tom has received awards from ASCD, NCTE, and several universities. His most recent award is the 2006 Richard A. Meade Award for Research in English Education. The award is given for contributions to research in the teaching of composition and in teacher preparation.
