William KistWilliam Kist is an associate professor at Kent State University, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses focused on adolescent literacy. He has been a middle school and high school English teacher; a Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum coordinator; and a consultant and trainer for school districts across the United States. Kist has over 30 national and international conference presentations and 10 published articles to his credit, including his book New Literacies in Action: Teaching and Learning in Multiple Media (2005, Teachers College Press). In addition to his work in education, Kist has worked as a video/film producer and musician. Kist is editing one independent feature film, Summer’s Journey, and is developing his original screenplay, Field Trip, to be filmed as an independent feature in 2008.

Staff Development Presentations with School Districts
William has many experiences with presentations and long-term partnerships with school districts for some K-12, but primarily 6-12 audiences. This partial list represents some of the work William has done in the past few years.
International and Regional Presentations
William has presented internationally on the subject he is most passionate about—multiliteracies—and will be presenting on that topic in the upcoming year at the NCTE meeting. He talks often about his case studies of "new literacies" and how we need to redefine literacy.

Published Works
William is involved in two upcoming NCTE publications including the development of an article in the next SLATE newsletter about support that new teachers need as they start in the profession and he has contributed a lesson on an upcoming book entitled, Making media matter: Lessons for literacy in the English classroom. Both are due out this fall.
Middle School Journal article on New Literacies
William is the online featured article in the September 2003 issue of Middle School Journal, a publication of the National Middle School Association. The article describes assignments in "new literacies" classrooms—ones that focus on the use of nonprint media in composition.
