David and Yvonne Freeman's Education and Professional Experience

Joint Bio Statement

Dr. Yvonne Freeman is a professor of bilingual education and Dr. David Freeman is a professor of language arts/ESL at The University of Texas at Brownsville. Both are interested in second language acquisition, literacy, bilingual education, and dual language for English language learners. In addition to doing staff development with school districts across the country, they present regularly at international, national, and state conferences.

The Freemans have published articles and book chapters jointly and separately on the topics of second language teaching, biliteracy, bilingual education, linguistics, and second language acquisition. The Freeman’s newest book, English Language Learners: The Essential Guide (Scholastic, 2007) is meant for mainstream teachers with ELLs in their classrooms. Other recent books include Teaching Reading and Writing in Spanish and English in Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms (Heinemann, March, 2006) and the translation of this book, La enseñanza de la lectura y la escritura en salones bilingües y de doble imersión (Heinemann, 2007). Their other books, all published by Heinemann,  include: Dual Language Essentials for Teachers and Administrators ( 2005), Essential Linguistics: What You Need to Know to Teach Reading, ESL, Spelling, Phonics, and Grammar (2004); Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Reach Limited Formal Schooling and Long-Term English Learners (2002), the second edition of Between Worlds: Access to Second Language Acquisition (2001), which received the Mildenberger Award from the Modern Language Association for outstanding research in the field of foreign and second language teaching, Teaching Reading in Multilingual Classrooms (2000), and ESL/EFL Teaching: Principles for Success (2001).

In addition to their other publications, the Freemans are lead authors of Rigby’s new ESL program, On Our Way to English and are part of the author team for Rigby’s new Rigby Literacy program, Literacy by Design. http://rigby.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/rigby.htm
