English language learners face the challenge of learning academic content while simultaneously being asked to take on English as an additional language.  NCTE is helping teachers address these challenges with NCTE’s Pathways for Supporting English Language Learners, a yearlong professional development experience that focuses on building teacher knowledge to advance student success.

The structure and content of the Pathways for Supporting English Language Learners are based on the NCTE Principles of Effective Professional Development and is organized around five key questions that middle and high school teachers from across the country are grappling with. Individuals or teams of teachers use a variety of data sources to determine which question(s) to focus on initially and then engage with a variety of resources designed to help build, extend, and assess their knowledge.

Pathways helps teachers who are asking questions such as:

  • In what ways can we plan and facilitate students’ language development while engaging learners in rigorous content?
  • How can we create effective learning environments that facilitate student achievement?
  • How can we provide opportunities for students to use language, learn language, and learn about language?
  • How can we help students actively engage in learning?
