Take a Tour of Pathways for Advancing Adolescent Literacy An in-depth look at how the research, resources, and tools of the Adolescent Literacy Pathway can work for you and/or your team.
How can I use Pathways to advance adolescent literacy at my school? Pathways is organized around five key questions that middle and high school teachers around the country are grappling with. Individuals or teams of teachers use a variety of data sources to determine which question(s) they will focus on initially and then click on that question to access a series of readings and activities designed to help you build, extend, and assess your knowledge. For example, you may choose to focus on the first question: How can I support my students as readers and writers while teaching challenging content?

What kinds of resources and activities will I find in Pathways? Once you choose a question you will begin building your knowledge with Reading Explorations and Learning Resources.

Within Reading Explorations you will find a variety of journal articles and book chapters related to your chosen topic that will help you think complexly and see alternate perspectives. We've picked from thousands of peer-reviewed publications to bring you the best readings on adolescent literacy.

Within Learning Resources you will have opportunities to build new knowledge and understandings with resources such as research reports, position statements, and audio and video recordings.

The Pathways Applied Learning Resources invite you to apply your learning with "in the classroom" activities and strategies. These resources are designed to be adapted by you to meet the individual needs and interests of you and your students.

How can Pathways help create a professional community at my school? A crucial part of the Pathways experience is engaging teachers as a community of practice. Throughout Pathways you will find Teacher Collaboration links that provide opportunities to talk with colleagues and literacy experts about issues that impact your practice. School-based teams or study groups are also encouraged to schedule time for face-to-face collaboration. In addition to public discussion forums, Pathways teams are also provided with a private forum for team-specific conversations.

How can Pathways support teams of teachers at my school or in my region? Whether you are part of a school-based study group, a district-wide professional development project, or a state-wide initiative, the team features offered in Pathways can support you in succeeding with local professional development initiatives and goals. Teams might be made up of various content area teachers, administrators, reading specialists, media specialists, curriculum coordinators, or anyone interested in exploring ways to support adolescent students with the literacy challenges they face in all of their classes, whether those challenges be with reading, writing, speaking, thinking, or listening, and whether they occur in the science, math, social studies, or English classroom.

Reading Specialists Will…
Teams identify a Site Facilitator to lead their efforts, and NCTE supports this literacy leader with an online Site Facilitator Training course, NCTE membership, and subscriptions to three NCTE journals. We support and encourage team communication and collaboration with a private Team Discussion Forum and a private area within the program for Team File Sharing. As part of an effective professional development model, teams are also encouraged to schedule time for face-to-face collaboration. Participating in professional learning should not be just one more thing for teachers to add to their to do list. If you already have a professional development study group or team in place, the Pathways resources and tools are intended to support the work you are already doing and make it easier for you to share thoughts, ideas, and resources.

How does Pathways encourage ongoing reflection and self-assessment? Pathways offers several tools to aid in documenting your experiences, reflections, and new learning. The My Notes tool allows you to easily annotate any article or resource with your thoughts. You can access a list of your notes at any time to read or print.

Pathways also includes an e-Portfolio tool to allow you to build a private, professional portfolio and document and assess your Pathways experiences and learning. Throughout the program you will be prompted to visit your ePortfolio with your thoughts and reflections.

The ePortfolio allows you to post your thoughts and reflections via the Blog feature, upload Artifacts of your learning (i.e., adapted lesson plans, samples of student work, etc.), and set Objectives for yourself or your team. For example, if your district has professional development goals already in place you might set these up as objectives in your ePortfolio and throughout the year attach artifacts or reflections from your Pathways experiences that demonstrate achievement of the goals.

The ePortfolio is private and unique to each Pathways participant. There may be times that you wish to share certain items from your portfolio with your colleagues or administrators, and the ePortfolio allows you to do this with its Publication feature. This could be especially desirable to those wishing to receive credit for their participation.

Does participation in Pathways count towards the continuing education credits that I need? Participation in NCTE's Pathways often meets state or district requirements for continuing education units. Check with your administrator to find out how your work in Pathways meets your district's continuing education requirements. A graduate credit option is also available through the University of San Diego for an additional fee. To aid participants in documenting their Pathways efforts, the program offers a Reporting tool that allows individuals to access their time logged in, posts made to discussion forums, and resources accessed.
