Full access to all of NCTE's journals
in one place—for one low price!

Instead of searching through your files for your favorite article or paging through issue after issue in search of an idea for next week's class, you can simply click your way to just what you need, when you need it!

The CoLEARN Writing Initiative is an online professional development resource for K-12 ELA teachers that provides access to NCTE's entire library of journals published from 1997 forward. That means you have access to current issues, plus the archives, of each journal—for just $150 a year!

CoLEARN also has a structured yet flexible series of readings and writings available on writing instruction, learning new strategies for teaching writing, and investigating how your student writers respond best to various approaches.

About CoLEARN's Writing Resources . . .

You will also be able to join online communities to discuss and reflect on the readings, writings and your teaching strategies with interested colleagues in your district, state, and across the country.

The program will take you through three phases of development in understanding writing and writing instruction:

There is no timeline for completing these phases; rather, as an individual or a team, you can spend as much time in each phase as seems productive for you.

Within each phase you’ll notice three strands that correspond to the last three goals above:

  • Writing as a Tool for Thinking and Learning
  • Assessing Writing to Support and Account for Learning
  • Parents and Others as Partners in Students’ Literacy Learning

By choosing to immerse yourself in one of the many strands of study inherent in the complex world of writing instruction, you will be able to focus for a period of time on a single area.  Committing to a focus area can lead to deep study, the kind that encourages us as teachers to think carefully and complexly—and ultimately lead to changed practice.
