Research-Based Professional Development Resources from the Experts

Bring out the Best in your teaching--If your school is charged with improving student writing, reading, or ESL Instruction and upgrading materials but budgets are limited, this program is the answer for you—CoLEARN can provide the foundation and structure to integrate your school, district, and state programs.

As the professional home of many of the nation’s finest English language arts educators, NCTE has been the leading authority in literacy and language arts studies since 1911. NCTE’s CoLEARN program is an online inquiry model designed to promote professional development for K–16 teachers. With facilitators for topics specific to reading, writing, and ESL, CoLEARN has a structured yet flexible series of readings and writings that encourages teachers to reflect on their own beliefs about instruction, learn new strategies, and investigate how student writers respond best to various approaches.

CoLEARN offers teachers a number of options for professional development:

Professional readings with over 2,000 full-text articles from NCTE’s many journals and books, searchable by title, author, or topic of inquiry.

Reading Invitations include links to full text articles with accompanying questions to stimulate discussion.

Writing engagements invite teachers to respond to a specific prompt about some aspect of writing pedagogy.

Online communities provide teachers with the opportunity to discuss their readings, writings, and reflections on teaching with interested teachers in their own school sor across the country.

Conversations with prominent writers, composition scholars, and teachers offer participants an opportunity to ask questions and learn from some of the most exciting professionals in the field.

Here’s how it works:

The program’s structure allows you to take advantage of all CoLEARN has to offer—but in a time frame and manner that makes sense in your particular context. CoLEARN revolves around two overlapping structures: (1) Phases of Development, designed to lead teachers through a thoughtful process of considering and then extending their own beliefs and approaches to writing instruction and (2) Strands of Study, designed to encourage teachers to conduct a deep study in a particular area within writing pedagogy.

For example, current strands of study in the Writing Initiative unit include:

Writing as a Tool for Thinking and Learning

Assessing Writing to Support and Account for Learning

Parents and Others as Partners in Students

Literacy Learning

However you choose to move through these phases and strands, CoLEARN’s central tenet remains constant: to encourage teachers to think carefully and complexly—and ultimately lead to changed practice.
