Reading Initiative CoLEARN

RI CoLEARN is the on-line resource for schools participating in NCTE's long-term professional development program, the Reading Initiative. The site extends the study group experience and print-based Reading Initiative materials with an extensive, searchable database of professional reading, forums for professional dialogue, and opportunities to engage in web conversations with recognized literacy leaders.

Jerry Harste, noted researcher, author, and Reading Initiative Teaching Team member, is organizing curriculum invitations in the same format as his popular Voices from the Middle (March 2003) article, “What Do We Mean by Literacy Now?”  We’re also organizing site leadership/coaching resources on this site, as well as key forms and strategies from across the curriculum studies with the intent that this site can also serve as a kind of electronic filing cabinet. Because of the “value added” nature of these resources, the site will only be open to RI groups and enrolled alumni groups.

NCTE is also collaborating with the South Carolina Department of Education to create a customized CoLEARN site to support the professional development of teachers participating in the state-wide South Carolina Reading Initiative.

All Reading Initiative resources are developed based on research on literacy, assessment, school change, and constructivist learning theory. Learn more about the Reading Initiative at http://www.ncte.org/profdev/onsite/readinit.
