NCTE's Pathways for Advancing Adolescent Literacy

Students

Providing Direction for Student Success Through Teacher Learning

The Challenge:  Improving Secondary Students’ Reading and Writing Skills so They are Fully Prepared to Succeed in a Global Economy.

  • Limited literacy skills cause 3,000 American students to drop out of high school each day.
  • Without sophisticated reading and writing skills, students fail to achieve in all content areas—including math, science, and social studies.
  • Decoding texts isn’t the main problem—mastering complex texts is the key differentiator between students who are ready for college and success in the workplace, and those who aren’t.

Research reveals the key to improvement:  Fully prepared teachers who are committed to life-long learning and inspiring every student to succeed.

  • Comprehensive, school-wide approaches that provide sustained professional development for all faculty and improve literacy skills by systematically targeting lessons and strategies to learners’ needs are still rare in US secondary schools.
  • Research shows that accomplished teachers choose from an array of strategies to increase student motivation, deepen comprehension, promote clear expression, and sharpen critical thinking. Teachers need on-going support to stay abreast of trends and share findings from their classrooms with other teacher-learners.
