The CoLEARN Writing Initiative is an online professional development resource for K-12 ELA teachers that provides access to NCTE's entire library of journals published from 1997 forward. With a structured yet flexible series of readings and writings available on writing instruction, participants learn new strategies for teaching writing, and investigate how their student writers respond best to various approaches.

About CoLEARN's Writing Resources . . .
Writing engagements provide the opportunity to engage in discussion with other teachers across the country. CoLEARN's online communityembodies a model of inquiry in which curricular conversations serve in helping teachers make sense of what they experience in the classroom. Participants discuss and reflect on the readings, writings and their own teaching strategies with interested colleagues in their district, state, and across the country.
Writing engagements are related to--but not limited to--reading invitations, as a way to provide a framework for teachers to make sense of theory as it relates to their own experiences in teaching and learning.
The program’s structure allows you to take advantage of all CoLEARN has to offer—but in a time frame and manner that makes sense in your particular context. CoLEARN Writing Intiative revolves around two overlapping structures: (1) Phases of Development, designed to lead teachers through a thoughtful process of considering and then extending their own beliefs and approaches to writing instruction and (2) Strands of Study, designed to encourage teachers to conduct a deep study in a particular area within writing pedagogy.
The three phases of development in understanding writing and writing instruction are
Looking at Yourself as a Writer
Looking at Your Teaching of Writing
Understanding How Writing Works By Looking At Students As Writers Within each phase you’ll notice three strands that correspond to the last three goals above:
Writing as a Tool for Thinking and Learning
Assessing Writing to Support and Account for Learning
Parents and Others as Partners in Students’ Literacy Learning
By choosing to immerse yourself in one of the many strands of study inherent in the complex world of writing instruction, you will be able to focus for a period of time on a single area. Committing to a focus area can lead to deep study, the kind that encourages us as teachers to think carefully and complexly—and ultimately lead to changed practice.
