Carole Edelsky will be the keynote speaker at the Opening Session on Thursday evening, July 17
Carole Edelsky is a Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Arizona State University. She has taught courses in sociolinguistics, language education, language arts methods, reading methods, discourse analysis, teacher research, and gender and language. Her book Writing in a Bilingual Program: Habia Una Vez reported on one of the first book-length studies of the writing of bilingual children. Her long-time interests in issues concerning the language education of minority children, critical literacy and political advocacy in education are reflected in her anthologies: Making Justice Our Project and The Fate of Progressive Language Policies and Practices (the latter co-edited Curt Dudley-Marling) and in With Literacy and Justice for All. 3rd edition. She was named Outstanding English Language Arts Educator, 2000, by the National Council of Teachers of English.
Monica Brown will be the Opening Session speaker on Friday morning, July 18
Monica Brown, Ph.D. is the author of award-winning bilingual books for children, including My Name Is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz/Me llamo Celia: La vida de Celia Cruz (Luna Rising), which was awarded the Américas Award for Children's Literature and a Pura Belpré Honor. Her second picture book, My Name Is Gabriela: The Life of Gabriela Mistral/Me llamo Gabriela: La vida de Gabriela Mistral (Luna Rising) shares the story of the first Latina to win a Nobel Prize. Her other books include the newly released Butterflies on Carmen Street (Arté Publico Press) and My Name Is Gabito: The Life of Gabriel García Márquez/Me llamo Gabito: La vida de Gabriel García Márquez, a Junior Library Guild Premier Selection. Chavela and the Magic Rainforest Chicle (Luna Rising), Pelé, King of Soccer (HarperCollins Rayo), and Side By Side: The Story of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez (HarperCollins Rayo) are forthcoming. Monica's books are inspired by her Peruvian-American heritage and passion to share Latino/a stories with children.
Monica Brown is an Associate Professor of English at Northern Arizona University, specializing in U.S. Latino Literature and Multicultural Literature. She also writes and publishes scholarly work with a Latino focus, including Gang Nation: Delinquent Citizenship in Puerto Rican and Chicano and Chicana Literature; and numerous scholarly articles/chapters on Latino/a literature and cultural studies. She regularly speaks at conferences and book festivals across the country including the Northern Arizona Book Festival, The Texas Book Festival, The Miami Book Festival, and the National and California Associations of Bilingual Educators.
She is a recipient of the prestigious Rockefeller Fellowship on Chicano Cultural Literacies from the Center for Chicano Studies at the University of California.

Kathy Short will be the keynote speaker on Saturday, July 19
Kathy G. Short has focused her work on literature circles, curriculum as inquiry, and collaborative learning environments for teachers and children. She is a professor in the Department of Language, Reading and Culture at the University of Arizona and has worked extensively with teachers to develop curriculum that actively involves students as readers and inquirers. She is co-editor of Language Arts, journal of the National Council of Teachers of English, and co-author of many books, including Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers, Learning Together through Inquiry, Literature as a Way of Knowing, and Talking about Books. Her most recent book is Stories Matter: The Complexity of Cultural Authenticity in Children’s Literature. She directs a center on international children’s and adolescent literature at the University of Arizona.

Bob Wortman will be the keynote speaker at the Closing Session on Sunday morning, July 20
Bob Wortman has been an elementary teacher, K-12 Reading Specialist for 13 years. He was principal of a court-ordered desegregated magnet school with a dual language strand for 13 years. He also served as director of Title I and Literacy programs for Tucson Unified School District for 4 years. After 30 years as a teacher, principal and central office administrator in public schools, he currently teaches graduate courses in Literacy and Children’s Literature as Adjunt Associate Professor in the Department of Language, Reading and Culture at the University of Arizona. He is a seasoned presentor at national and state conferences and is active on the board of the Tucson Area Reading Council and the University of Arizona Colledge of Education Alumni Council. He especially enjoys bringing the writing of our best authors into the writing lives of children K-12 and energizing teachers and administrators to the joys and challeges of authentic reading and writing in classrooms by modeling reading and writing wokshop lessons in classrooms across the country.
He is the author of two books published by Stenhouse Publishers: Administrators Supporting School Change and Leadership in Whole Language.
