Literacy Leaders Institute Join us for a lively two days—Sunday evening, June 24, through Tuesday afternoon, June 26—as we look at what it means to be a literacy leader in your school. Though spotlighting the middle and high school English/language arts department chair, this institute is designed for anyone in a literacy leadership position at the school or district level. Intended to help you improve your leadership skills while you cultivate a deeper understanding of literacy education in the twenty-first century, this institute is as much about information as it is about inspiration.
Featured Speakers
Institute Overview We hope to engage and motivate participants by exploring issues in three different contexts over the course of each day. Nationally recognized experts will stimulate our group thinking through plenary sessions that address the broad issues of literacy development. Later, we will break into smaller groups, led by exemplary literacy leaders, to stretch and challenge our thinking in focused discussions. There, we will consider essential questions such as:
- What are the critical reading strategies I should share at my school with English and content area teachers?
- What’s the role of the literacy coach in a middle or high school setting and how do I use this person effectively?
- Department or district-wide meetings after school are often poorly attended or people are too tired to participate fully. What do I do so that people look forward to our meetings and leave wanting to know when the next one will be?
- What are the problems and possibilities for those who are charged with helping new teachers enter the profession?
- How do I keep up with all the research/articles/professional texts I should read and what are some practical ways to share information from those texts with teachers in my building/district? How do I get those teachers who don’t read educational books or journals to incorporate this important activity into their professional lives?
Discussion Leaders
We hope you will take a moment during the day to sign up for our optional end-of-day “critical conversations” with Kylene, Bob, and others. In this informal setting, we will “snack and chat” as we share our specific thoughts and questions about literacy, especially those related to helping struggling readers. These relaxed interactions are always filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a wealth of shared experience, leaving each participant buoyed by professional support and energized to meet the challenges ahead.

Registration for the 2007 Literacy Leaders Institute has reached its maximum enrollment.
Cost: $295* Dates: June 24–26, 2007 Location: Doubletree Guest Suites, Charleston, South Carolina
* Cost is for registration only. Travel and lodging expenses are the responsibility of the attendee.

- Two full days of keynotes and large-group and small-group discussions
