Introducing the National Center for Literacy Education - Previous Revision

The National Council of Teachers of English and the Ball Foundation have joined together in a project to celebrate the work of successful school teams across the country who are achieving remarkable results in advancing literacy learning. The new National Center for Literacy Education (NCLE) brings together leading education associations, policy organizations, and foundations to support powerful learning about literacy in every discipline.

NCLE will provide case studies and vignettes from schools engaged in innovative practices, expert commentary, research, and practice insights about how those practices can be adapted in varied local contexts, recognition and resources to school teams willing to share their expertise with others, and policy insights for administrative leaders and legislators.

In alliance with stakeholder groups representing educators and school/community leaders from every sector, the National Center for Literacy Education will be inaugurated at the 101st NCTE Annual Convention in Chicago. During the Convention, and for the remainder of the current school year, NCTE members will be invited to use the free Literacy in Learning Exchange website to build or further develop a community of practice in their schools. Schools that embrace the challenge of sponsoring and supporting a community of practice will be eligible to apply for recognition and support as Literacy in Every Classroom Schools.

To complement the gains observed in participating schools, NCLE will fund collaborative research projects and share findings with policy leaders at all levels. Feedback will be provided to school teams who seek information or advice about their work. And NCLE stakeholder organizations will make available what we learn from participating schools through peer-reviewed publications, seminars, and colloquies.
