NCTE Response to the NAACP Travel Advisory for the State of Missouri

The National Council of Teachers of English takes the concerns outlined in the NAACP Missouri Travel Advisory very seriously. As our vision states, "NCTE and its members will apply the power of language and literacy to actively pursue justice and equity for all students and the educators who serve them.”

There are many ways to take a stand against injustice, and NCTE will do so with local engagement through the voices of our members in St. Louis in November. We will not be moving the Annual Convention, but we are calling upon the Convention and Visitors Bureau and local organizations to make our expectations for member safety clear. We believe our collective presence in St. Louis supports the teachers and students whose schools and homes are in Missouri. Many NCTE members in the state have already contributed countless hours of volunteer time to make the local experience rich and welcoming. We, not just as an organization, but as collective members, stand with them.

Additionally, we will work with NCTE members to create a forum for discussion of the issues outlined in the NAACP advisory and the role that English and language arts teachers can play in fostering change. As literacy educators we work every day to advance access, power, agency, affiliation, and impact for all learners. Now more than ever, it’s critical that we come together to support one another in advancing this cause.
