Resolution on Workload

1987 NCTE Annual Business Meeting in Los Angeles, California


The proposers of this resolution have called for the National Council of Teachers of English to conduct a status study of the workload of secondary English teachers. This call stemmed from the realization that existing research on class size and teaching load has been inconclusive and not specific to the situation of teachers of English.

In calling for new studies on workload, the members urged the use of alternative research designs to gauge more completely the effect of class size and workload on student learning in English. Be it therefore


Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English conduct a status study of the working conditions of secondary English teachers, to include, but not be limited to, teaching load and class size;

     that the Council issue a call for studies employing alternative research paradigms that will contribute to our understanding of the relationship between class size and student learning in secondary English classes; and

     that the Council fund these studies, as feasible, perhaps through the NCTE Research Foundation.
