Resolution on Listening Goals and Objectives

1985 NCTE Annual Business Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania


Concern about inadequate plans being devised by school districts for teaching listening skills prompted NCTE members to pass this resolution, warning of teaching plans not based on well-reasoned theory or relevant research. They cautioned that some of these curriculum plans artificially segment the complex, holistic processes involved in listening and assign segments to different grade levels in school, creating a false impression of listening as a series of discrete skills. Be it therefore


Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English affirm the position that goals and objectives for listening instruction must be grounded in sound theory and relevant research in order to unify curriculum for listening instruction at all levels.
