EdSource Expands Postsecondary Coverage

Submitted On: Friday, September 15, 2017

Analyst: Olson, Carol

"EdSource is expanding its reporting on the challenges young people face in achieving their academic and career goals after they graduate from high school.

Over its 40-year history, EdSource has focused largely on pre-K through 12th grade issues. There is now urgent need to focus more directly on challenges students face after they graduate from high school, said EdSource Executive Director Louis Freedberg.

'California’s future rests heavily on the ability of students to achieve their academic goals after high school, and to do so in a timely fashion,' Freedberg said. 'But too many students lack the support they need to complete their courses of study in a timely way—or don’t make it through college at all.'

With nearly 3 million students attending California’s public colleges and universities, California’s ability to serve those students has implications for the health of the economy of both the state and the nation. EdSource will focus its reporting on the barriers to college completion among ‘first generation’ students and others who have often struggled after they graduate from high school.

EdSource plans to expand its reporting team in the future to cover not only students enrolled in two-and four-year institutions, but those seeking certificates, apprenticeships and other preparation they need to succeed in the 21st century workforce."
