Supporting Preservice Teachers
college students at a computerThe Conference on English Education (CEE) works with NCTE members who are engaged in the preparation, support, and continuing education of teachers of English language arts/literacy. CEE members just wrapped up their summer conference, "Moving Forward: Possibilities in English Teacher Education"; search #CEE13 on Twitter to see what they had to say during the conference! And see the following resources that show how we can all support preservice teachers just entering the profession.

Guidelines for the Preparation of Teachers of English Language Arts, prepared by the NCTE Standing Committee on Teacher Preparation and Certification

"Mentoring Preservice and Early-Career English Teachers in Online Environments" in the English Journal column "Mentoring Matters"

"'Why Do You Think That?' A Supervisor's Mediation of a Preservice English Teacher's Understanding of Instructional Scaffolding" from CEE's English Education

"An Online Writing Partnership: Transforming Classroom Writing Instruction," in which high school and college teachers describe the evolution of their successful, innovative program of graduate-level preservice English teachers who serve as writing consultants for high school English students

Nancy Kolodziej's ReadWriteThink.org community story, "ReadWriteThink: Ideal for College Classrooms, Too!"

"Teacher Research as a Practical Tool for Learning to Teach" from Language Arts, which tells the story of a semester-long teacher-research project in which a preservice teacher learns about the role of inquiry and native language in responding to the instructional needs of a young English learner

"Preservice Teachers Planning for Critical Literacy Teaching" reflects on a yearlong project conducted by an instructor of an Advanced Methods course in conjunction with preservice teachers to help them plan and implement critical literacy units in their high school and middle school student teaching placements

What is your experience with teacher education or working with preservice teachers?
