Supporting Teachers as They Head Back to School

While many back-to-school blog posts, resources, and articles talk about supporting students, equally important is supporting teachers. How can we support other teachers as well as ourselves?

The recent issue of Talking Points explores the types of support that teachers give one another, students, and their families.

Supporting Beginning English Teachers: Research and Implications for Teacher Induction book coverSupporting Beginning English Teachers: Research and Implications for Teacher Induction shares the results of a study of beginning and veteran English teachers to determine why new teachers leave within the first few years of teaching and how to retain those new teachers.

The themed issue of English Education "The Long and Winding Road: Supporting Teachers' Learning across the Lifespan" presents articles demonstrating how new teachers might move from experiences in methods courses to reflection and learning during the early years of teaching to collaborative inquiry and professional development with experienced colleagues.

Building the English Classroom book coverThe author of Building the English Classroom: Foundations, Support, Success offers personal reflections, classroom anecdotes, teaching materials, and student work while presenting strategies for managing the demands of the secondary English classroom.

Ongoing professional development is important, but attending meetings and conferences is not always feasible. Learn more about NCTE Web Seminars, including eight scheduled for this fall, focused on understanding the instructional shifts in the Common Core State Standards.

The NCTE Policy Research Brief on Teacher Learning Communities discusses the benefits of these communities as well as research-based recommendations for establishing teacher learning communities.
