Writing Across the Curriculum
from NCTE INBOX 11-8-11

According to Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum, a policy research brief produced by NCTE, "discipline-based instruction in reading and writing enhances student achievement in all subjects." Use the following resources from NCTE and ReadWriteThink.org to help expand your students' experience in writing across the curriculum:

Using the Writer's Notebook in Grades 3-8: A Teacher's Guide (E), by Janet Elliot, provides practical ideas, assignments, and examples of student writing.

"A Snapshot of Writing Instruction in Middle Schools and High Schools" (M-S), a 2011 EJ article, is a follow-up to the May 2009 issue of English Journal.

"When It Happens 'Across': Writing as Transformative and Expansive" (S); in this article the author asks, "Who teaches and does not teach writing, and why?" and "How can the teaching and doing of writing across the entire curriculum help our students and us better transact within the world?"

Everyday Genres: Writing Assignments Across the Disciplines (C); listen to an interview with author Mary Soliday.

"Writing in High School/Writing in College: Research Trends and Future Directions" (C) from College Composition and Communication.

The Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing describes the rhetorical and 21st century skills as well as habits of mind and experiences that are critical for college success.
