INBOX is a weekly e-mail wrap-up of the most important stories in English language arts education, ideas for your classroom, and news from NCTE.

Sent each week to NCTE members (to the email address we have on file for you), this e-newsletter is mailed once a month to nonmembers.

Members can update their email address by sending a message to NCTE; nonmembers can use this form to subscribe to receive a monthly issue of INBOX or can join NCTE to receive INBOX each week as part of their membership.

Write, Phone, or Tweet for Literacy Education
Take Action!In 3 minutes, right from your smart phone or your desktop, you can make a difference. Contact your legislator now through February 28 so that issues important to NCTE members are on the minds of legislators when NCTE advocates for literacy education this Thursday in Washington, DC. Share your expertise as an educator and your experience in the classroom and ask your legislators to

  • support professional learning defined as teacher collaboration,
  • rely on and support the professional expertise of teachers, and
  • recommend that evaluation of institutions of higher education be based on multiple factors and with multiple kinds of evidence.

Take Note! The National Center for Literacy Education, an NCTE initiative, will issue a report on February 27 during Advocacy Day, while NCTE participants are visiting their legislators to emphasize that educator collaboration is key to quality literacy instruction.

NCTE Announces New Outstanding Fiction Award 
Named after an esteemed children's literature specialist and NCTE member, the Charlotte Huck Award for Outstanding Fiction for Children will promote and recognize excellence in the writing of fiction for children. The award commemorates the work of Charlotte Huck and her focus on the importance of bringing books and children together in significant ways at the same time that it recognizes fiction that has the potential to transform children’s lives by inviting compassion, imagination, and wonder. Look for the winning titles in January.
