INBOX is a weekly e-mail wrap-up of the most important stories in English language arts education, ideas for your classroom, and news from NCTE.

Sent each week to NCTE members (to the email address we have on file for you), this e-newsletter is mailed once a month to nonmembers.

Members can update their email address by sending a message to NCTE; nonmembers can use this form to subscribe to receive a monthly issue of INBOX or can join NCTE to receive INBOX each week as part of their membership.

Basking in the Afterglow of the NCTE Annual Convention
Thousands of educators sharing and learning together!
More than 5,000 educators attended the NCTE Annual Convention in Las Vegas two weeks ago. And many more were able to join us through Twitter (#ncte12 and @ncte) and through session handouts posted in the NCTE Connected Community

This issue is about educators learning together . . . and recognizing that the professional learning that occurred during the Convention (from sessions, hallway chats, speakers, enhancing our networks) did not "stay in Vegas." We've brought home that learning and the connections we made with one another, and they are at the heart of our students' learning. As the NCTE "Principles of Professional Development" say, "Professional development of teachers/faculty is a central factor leading to student success."  

As the fictional English teacher Sylvia in Steve Shann's blog post says, "For most of last week I loved being an English teacher. Feeling myself a member of the tribe. Amongst my own. I bought books and sat in corners with colleagues sharing excited thoughts about what we'd been reading. I rubbed shoulders with authors whose words take me into other worlds, worlds which become my own world. I was part of a virtual and live community made up of those who love language and the imagination and stories. I felt alive in a way that I did when I was studying English at college, a part of a community of readers and writers, a member of a tribe who had access to a unique way of knowing that helps us see more of what is around and within us. I couldn’t wait to get back to my classroom, invigorated, inspired, renewed, clarified."

Natalie Merchant and Sir Ken Robinson kicked off the Convention's first two general sessions:

NCTE member Franki Sibberson writes about the NCTE Annual Convention, ". . . it is always tricky when someone asks me what I learned . . . because it isn't so much what I learned but what I came away thinking about." She adds, "NCTE's Annual Convention is the time that we connect in person with all those people we learn with throughout the year. We continue conversations we've been having over Twitter and we start new ones. We meet old friends for the first time and we make new friends who we immediately follow on Twitter. It is a time to connect and reconnect, a time to refocus our conversations."
