National Center for Literacy Education

NCTE Launches National Literacy Education Center
This new Center recognizes educators as the drivers of change focusing on supporting school change where it counts -- in the schools. The Center will celebrate the work of successful school teams across the country that are achieving remarkable results in advancing literacy learning, provide funds for research on how teams (communities of practice) do this work, and share results with policymakers. "Communities of Practice Will Share and Learn on Free Website":
A major component of NCLE, the free Literacy in Learning Exchange website, was debuted during the Annual Convention to focus groups whose feedback will help shape the ways the site provides cases and vignettes from schools engaged in innovative practices along with expert commentary, research, and insights about how those practices can be adapted in varied local contexts. The website will be available to all early in 2012. NCLE is funded by the Ball Foundation and supported by over 20 stakeholders.

Donations of Hundreds of Books to Help Literacy Efforts
On Monday, November 21, hundreds of books donated by the educators and exhibitors attending the NCTE Convention were donated to Open Books, a Chicago nonprofit group that promotes literacy and serves more than 4,000 students annually through its literacy programs. Founded in 2006, Open Books is a nonprofit social venture that operates an extraordinary bookstore, provides community programs, and mobilizes 3,000 volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond. Becca Keaty, director of external relations at Open Books notes, "Every dollar spent on books helps support literacy programs for youth and teens in Chicago." Regarding the donation, Dustin Walsh, book director, says, "Thank you again for hosting the drive; this is a great opportunity to team up and we appreciate you working with us."
