Continua for Building Capacity

Continua for Capacity Building is a tool developed by NCLE to assist groups or organizations in identifying professional learning conditions and practices that they do well, as well as areas in need of strengthening. Each continuum extends the Framework for Capacity Building by describing a developmental progression of key elements within each domain.

We recommend that a team first take the Asset Inventory and use the team’s results to select one or two domains to explore more deeply. Use the appropriate continuum to determine where current practices lie in the developmental progression, where the team would like to improve, and the actions the team will take to improve a particular structure or practice.

As your team works on a literacy goal or inquiry question (the content of your learning), these continua will help you simultaneously consider the process of your learning.  If you don’t already have a framework for guiding your team’s inquiry, you might be interested in NCLE’s Inquiry Guide that provides a framework for considering both a literacy-related question and a goal for improving capacity-building structures and practices.
