Bilingual / ELL

Members often contact the NCTE headquarters for information on particular topics or programs. While NCTE does not endorse or recommend specific programs, the membership has passed resolutions related to many current issues. This resource site is a compilation of NCTE resources, support materials, and excerpts from teacher commentary on frequently requested topics.

Bilingual Education and the support of English as Second Language Learners, more commonly referred to now as English Language Learners, is a priority for many language educators. While different theories of second language learning and instructional support exist, generally bilingual/ELL researchers consider the strategies, tools and pedagogy most helpful to those learning English, including the enlistment and use of learners’ first language in support of learning a second language.
