2013 Award Winner: Tonya Perry
Middle level education has been Tonya’s focus throughout her career as a classroom teacher and university professor. As associate professor at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, she teaches and researches the topics of adolescent reading and writing and curriculum design in an effort to find the best ways to help teachers and students develop their talents and maximize their potential. Monsieur Marceau: Actor without Words by Leda Schubert and illustrated by Gérard DuBois (Roaring Brook Press) has been awarded with the 2013 NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children. Each year, one winner and up to five honorable mention books are recognized along with a list of recommended books.
Join the 2013 Orbis Pictus Award celebrations during the NCTE Annual Convention on Saturday, November 23:
- Attend a discussion of the winning nonfiction titles in Session G.28 at 9:30 a.m.
- Have lunch with the authors during the Books for Children Luncheon at 12:30 p.m.
- Meet the authors of the winning nonfiction titles in Session K.56 at 4:15 p.m.
NCTE’s K-12 Principles in Practice imprint connects research with classroom practice offering teachers concrete illustrations of effective classroom practices based in NCTE research briefs and policy statements. Books within the imprint are grouped in strands focusing on adolescent literacy, writing, and assessment.

The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN) promotes communication and cooperation among all individuals who have a special interest in adolescent literature, presents programs and conferences on this subject, promotes and increases the number of articles and publications devoted to it and integrates the efforts of all those with an interest in this literature.
