2007 Edwin A. Hoey Award Winner

Lori  Atkins Goodson is the tenth recipient of the NCTE Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts.

The Edwin A. Hoey Award, cosponsored by the Weekly Reader Corporation, recognizes exceptional English language arts teachers of grades 5-8 who have demonstrated excellence in teaching English language arts and inspired a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning in their students.

The award was presented at the Middle Level Luncheon on Friday, November 16, 2007 in New York City during the NCTE Annual Convention. Following the luncheon, Lori presented a session titled "Taking the Stage: Struggling Middle-school Readers and Multi-genre Readers’ Theatre."

For the past seven years, Lori has been a seventh grade language arts teacher at Wamego Middle School in Kansas. In 2004 she earned her National Board Certification in Early Adolescence-English/Language Arts as well as completed her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Kansas State University. 

Lori has been involved in many leadership activities through out her career including co-director for the Flint Hills Writing Project (the Kansas affiliate of the National Writing Project), co-editor of the The ALAN Review, vice-president of the Kansas Association of Teachers of English (KATE), and served as president of the Wamego Teachers Association.

Lori has presented at numerous state, regional, and national conferences. Among those are the NCTE Annual Convention, WLU Literacies for All Summer Institute, The Writing Conference's Conference on Writing and Literature, the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN), the Kansas Association of Middle Level Educators, the Kansas Association of Teachers of English (KATE), and the 2006 World Congress on Reading.

Lori has published numerous articles on teaching English to adolescents in Voices from the Middle, the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, The ALAN Review, and the North Carolina English JournalShe is the faculty editor for the student literary magazine, Soul Script, which in 2005 was recognized by the NCTE Excellence in Student Literacy Magazine program.
