List and Forum Server Rules

When you join an NCTE listserv, you join a community of professionals who discuss a wide range of topics. As in any community, a variety of opinions are expressed. NCTE invites diverse opinions and values the dynamic discourse these opinions can generate. We ask that you read the following guidelines for online community participation. If you have questions, please contact the list manager noted in your welcome instructions.

NCTE lists are provided as a service of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Because of the technical difficulties involved with attachments, NCTE listservs are not set up to accept attachments. If you have materials that may be of interest to listserv members, please send them "offlist" to individuals.

Defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive language is considered cyber-bullying and inappropriate. Members are expected to refrain from such actions.

Posting to a listserv means that your words become public and are archived. As such, they can be accessed via search engines. All posts to an NCTE listserv become the "property" of NCTE. NCTE may use individual posts on its Web site or in print publications. While it is the custom to notify participants when a post will be used, as owner of the lists, NCTE is not legally obligated to do so.

NCTE respects the intellectual property of others and asks list participants to abide by all copyright laws.

As a tax-exempt organization, NCTE is prohibited from supporting candidates for public office. Participants are free to discuss political topics, especially those that pertain to the teaching of English, but they must understand that NCTE cannot endorse individual candidates, nor allow its resources to be used for such.

Participants are not allowed to sell products or use the listservs for any for-profit activities.

NCTE does not actively monitor the site for inappropriate postings and does not undertake editorial control of postings. However, in the event that any inappropriate posting is brought to the attention of NCTE staff, NCTE may take all appropriate action.

NCTE accepts no responsibility for the opinions and information posted by others. NCTE disclaims all warranties with regard to opinions or information posted on this site, whether posted by NCTE or any third party. In no event shall NCTE be liable for any special, indirect, or consequential damages or any damages whatsoever resulting from loss of use, data, or profits, arising out of or in connection with the use or performance of any information posted on this site.
