  Abstract: This issue of School Talk is about the writing that takes place in classes other than English language arts. Tracy L. Coskie discusses the need for student writing assignments to be authentic—something that fills a real need for a genuine audience and taps into a student writer’s strong interests. Heidi Trudel and Michelle Hornof discuss an innovative science-writing project in which students make observations in the natural area outside their school and then create a field guide to the plants they find there. Lynn French describes a letter-writing assignment in her fifth-grade social studies class that taps into students’ interests in public policy issues.
